Swim Groups

The SOCAL Aquatics Association offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the SOCAL Aquatics Association to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

Entry Level Programs
 
Minnows Group
 
The Minnows group is an introductory level program for new and continuing swimmers ages 5-9. The main emphasis is on refining the backstroke and freestyle. An introduction to the basics of butterfly, breaststroke, turns and dives will also be given. Practices are offered five days a week for: 45 min – 1hour. Swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend at least twice a week. Swimmers are asked to purchase a pair of fins for practice purposes.
            Criteria:
 
·         Be able to swim 25yds. freestyle with side breathing
·         Be able to swim 25 yds. backstroke
·         Be an enthusiastic learner
·         Competitions optional, but one day meet participation is recommended
 
Starfish Group
 
The starfish group is an introductory level program for new and continuing swimmers ages 7-11. Not only is the emphasis on refining the backstroke and freestyle, but also on getting the swimmers legal in the butterfly and breast strokes. Swimmers will be introduced to turns, dives as well as how to use the pace clock. Practices are offered five days a week for 1 hour. Swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend at least twice per week. Swimmers are asked to purchase a pair of fins for practices purposes.
            Criteria:
·         Be able to swim 25 yds. freestyle with side breathing
·         Be able to swim 25 yds. Backstroke
·         Have a basic understanding of breast and butterfly strokes
·         Be an enthusiastic learner
·         Competitions optional, but one day meet participation is recommended
 
Junior Group
 
The Junior group is an introductory level program for new and continuing swimmers ages 11 and up. The main emphasis is on refining the freestyle and backstroke. Swimmers will also learn the breast stroke and butterfly fundamentals. Coaches will introduce the basic techniques of turns and starts as well as give an introduction to the pace clock. Practices are offered five days a week for 1 hour. Swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend three practices per week. Swimmers may be asked to purchase fins, kick board and pull buoys.
            Criteria:
·         Be at least 11 years old
·         Be able to swim 25yds. of freestyle with side breathing
·         Be able to swim 25 yds. of backstroke
·         Have a basic understanding of butterfly and breaststroke
·         Competitions are optional, but one day meet participation is recommended

 

 

Continuing Programs

 

Black Group

 
The Black Group is designed for continuing swimmers ages 7-10 who have learned the basic skills of all four competitive strokes. Swimmers will also demonstrate a basic understanding of turns, starts and the use of the pace clock. This group will be introduced to more advanced practice drills and race strategies. Focus will be on achieving Red, Blue, Invite and JO time standards. Practices will consist of approximately 50% Technique and 50% Aerobic training. 1 hour practices will be offered five times a week and some Saturdays. Swimmers are strongly recommended to attend 3-4 practices per week. Swimmers will be asked to purchase fins for workout purposes.
 
          Criteria:
·         Be at least 7 years old
·         Be legal in all four competitive strokes, can swim a 100 IM
·         Can complete a 200 freestyle with all flip turns, nonstop
·         Can swim 10 x 50 freestyles on 1:20
·         Competes at swim meets at least one day per meet
 
                         
          Gold Group
 
The Gold Group is designed for continuing swimmers ages 11-14 who have learned the basic skills of all four competitive strokes. Swimmers will also demonstrate a basic understanding of turns, starts and the use of the pace clock. This group will be introduced to more advanced practice drills and race strategies. Focus will be on achieving Red, Blue, Invite and JO time standards. Practices will consist of approximately 50% Technique and 50% Aerobic training. One hour and Thirty minutes workouts will be offered five times a week and some Saturdays. Swimmers are strongly recommended to attend 3-4 practices per week. Swimmers will be asked to purchase fins, kick boards and pull buoys for workout purposes.
         
          Criteria:
·         Be at least 11 years old
·         Be legal in all four competitive strokes, can swim a 100 IM
·         Can complete a 300 freestyle with all flip turns, nonstop
·         Can swim 8 freestyles on 1:40.
·         Competes at swim meets at least one day per meet
 
 
 
 
 
Elite Programs
 
 
 
Varsity Group
 
The Varsity Group is designed to enrich the swimming experience of high school aged swimmers. Stroke technique will be emphasized through advanced practice drills and various race strategies. Coaches will utilize both aerobic and anaerobic training sessions. Careful attention will be paid to starts, turns and relay exchanges. The main focus of this group is on both achieving CIF time standards and progressing to a higher level of high school swimming. 2 hour practices are offered five days a week and some Saturdays for 2 hours. Doubles and dry land will be added at peak training times. Swimmers will be asked to purchase equipment such as kick boards, fins, pull buoys and paddles.
 
            Criteria:
·         Be a member of a high school swim program
·         Have the desire to do what it takes to become a top level high school swimmer
·         Be proficient in freestyle and backstroke, with some ability to swim butterfly and breast stroke
·         Swim one day of meets offered outside of High School swim season
 
 
 Senior Group (Pre-Senior)
 
The Senior Group is designed to enhance the skills of year round competitive swimmers who are proficient in the four competitive strokes. This group is a select group of athletes recommended by their coach based upon experience, age, ability and commitment. Advanced race strategies as well as aerobic and anaerobic training regimes will be used. At this level an education element will be added to the program including goal setting, nutrition, time management, mental strategies and college planning. The focus of this group will be on achieving Invite, JO, Senior Development, Sectional and National time standards. Practices will be offered six days a week and doubles could be introduced during specific training periods. Practice attendance minimums will be decided by the coach on an individual basis. Dry land work will also be introduced. Swimmers will be asked to purchase an equipment bag containing fins, kick board, and pull buoy and paddles.
 
Criteria:
·         Be at least 11 years old, or turning 11 before next championship meet
·         Be selected by the coaching staff
·         Have the desire to meet the group commitments
·         Swim both days of all required meets
